Term 2, Week 6

Principal's Report

2024 Education Week

Last week we joined in with schools all around the state to celebrate Education Week with a focus on STEM. Our students were highly engaged in their learning throughout the week and our staff provided a range of STEM learning opportunities from Prep to Year Six! Our Friday assembly was very well attended by our families who then stayed for open classrooms on Friday morning! Big thanks to everyone for your support!

2024 Student Attitudes to School Survey

The 2024 Student Attitudes to School Survey will be open at our school until Monday 27th May for all students in Years 4 to 6 to complete. Kate is our coordinator and will liaise with Year 4-6 staff to select a suitable time to administer the survey and will support students to complete the survey. The survey takes approximately 40mins to complete. We look forward to sharing our data once we receive it later this year.

Year 6 to Year 7 Transition

Big thanks to our families of our Year Six students for completing and returning the Year 6 to Year 7 Placement Application forms. These will now be processed and applications forwarded for consideration by the secondary schools. If families have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

School Uniform

With the cooler weather, now is the perfect time to check your child’s school uniform and purchase any items needed. Nearnung Primary School expects all students to be in school uniform every day, including school jumpers and school jackets. Wearing a school uniform helps students to feel connected to their school, which in turn enhances the likelihood of engagement in school activities. Thank you for your support.

Attendance

Our current attendance rate is 87.2%. Thank you to our families for ensuring your child attends school every day, unless they are unwell. Let’s continue to work together to bring our attendance rate up to >90%.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

This week our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) focus is: INCLUSION - We include and this is being explicitly taught, referencing our School Wide Expectations matrix. This is also a focus at our morning Activate Wellbeing sessions with all classes and at our weekly assembly on Friday! Each day our students are acknowledged with House Tickets when they demonstrate our expectations and the total points for each House is shared weekly at assembly.

Farewell

This is my final week at Nearnung Primary School and I take this opportunity to thank our school community for your very positive and enthusiastic support of your child’s learning and of the school. Nearnung Primary School is thriving! The preliminary release of 2024 NAPLAN data shows our students (Year 3 and Year 5) overall position in English and Mathematics as being strong. Our wellbeing data is sensational with our students working hard every day to learn and demonstrate our school wide expectations. Parent feedback taken from the most recent parent survey is also very strong. 66 surveys were returned from our families. 96.9% of all responses agree with the survey statements. An overview is provided inside this newsletter.

I wish Nearnung Primary School all the very best for the future. A process is underway to appoint an Acting Principal before a substantive principal is appointed later this year.

Have a wonderful week everyone. Remember that whenever you have a good idea, a query or concern you want to share, please feel free to chat with your child’s teacher, Kerry or myself.

Take care.

Children Crossing

When parking or walking along Polly Parade please make sure your family uses the School Crossing to cross the road. Parents should park the car before students get out of the car. Never stop the car on the road to let children out. The crossing has been installed to help keep us all safe. Barb is our regular School Crossing Supervisor and she is here to help.

TIMES: 8.15am - 9.15am and 2.30 - 3.30pm every day.

From the Office

Mobile Phones

The Department of Education requires students who choose to bring mobile phones (including watch phones) to school to have them switched off and securely stored during school hours.

Nearnung Primary School provides secure storage in the Administration Building for student phones. All students must present their phones to reception on arrival and collect them again at the end of each school day. Thank you for your support.

Around Our School - Year 3/4/5 Classes

Literacy

This term in Reading, we have been learning about non-fiction texts and their many features. We have been exploring a range of non-fiction texts and diving deep into reading strategies, such as summarising, synthesising and analysing text structures to further support students in developing their comprehension abilities of texts.

In Writing, we have been running a writer’s workshop, which was designed to help students consolidate their skills in punctuation, spelling, sentence structure and grammar. This, combined with our exploration of non-fiction texts, will be a great segue into then covering procedural texts, which will start this week.  The students are very engaged and keep to continue updating their reading and writing skills.

Mathematics

This term in Mathematics, we have been learning about addition and subtraction as part of our number and algebra unit of work. We have examined strategies used to solve addition and subtraction problems. Sometimes we have used our own strategies and have further developed our understanding by implementing new strategies we have learnt. We have been learning to analyse worded problems and apply these strategies to real world contexts, to make mathematics meaningful in our classroom.

Additionally, we have been learning about data representation and interpretation as part of our statistics and probability unit of work. We have examined different types of lists, tables and graphs to begin to understand why and how data is important. Together, we have posed categorical questions and have surveyed each other to gather data that we would like to know, for example ‘what is your favourite fruit?’. From there, we have constructed different types of graphs (picture and column) to represent our data. We have then used our data to interpret and discuss results. For example, ‘which is the most popular fruit?’ or ‘which is the least popular fruit?’. We are working hard to complete this process on our own at the moment, to complete our Term 2 portfolio task.

Inquiry Learning

This term, we have been learning all about Healthy and Safe Kids. We have been looking at how we can be healthy and active with the support of the Wyndham City Council Active Kids Program. We have been recording how much fruit and vegetables we eat, how much water we drink and how active we are. Then we are learning about the impact it has on our bodies.
Some things that have surprised us are how much five servings of vegetables is and what our “sometimes foods” are. We have discovered that we are active and enjoy moving and doing sports.

Wellbeing

The Resilience Project
This term in Wellbeing, we have been examining the concept of gratitude during our resilience project session. We have collaborated to create class definitions of gratitude and have covered lessons and activities that include the following. Students have worked to apply their knowledge in the classroom and outside when interacting with their peers.

Year 3Year 4
- What is gratitude?
- Moments of gratitude
- Gratitude Journal
- Bucket Filling
- Gratitude Letter
- Taking thanks for granted
- Introduction to gratitude
- My playground (Part 1-3)
- Gratitude wall
- Thank you poster
- Gratitude graph

Wellbeing and Respectful Relationships (RRRR)
The aim of the Respectful Relationships program is to promote respect and gender equality and help students learn how to build healthy relationships. It prepares students to face challenges by developing problem-solving skills and building resilience and confidence. This term during respectful relationships, we have focused on topic 3 - Positive Coping. We have examined concepts that include:
  • Everyone is different
  • Understanding strong emotions
  • Identifying and responding appropriately to angry feelings
  • Making an apology

Kind regards,
Michael, Agnes, Kunal and Jane
